Join us at Magruder’s of DC to taste the award-winning wines of Domaine Chandon and Joseph Phelps on Thursday, April 18th, presented by Anne Deno from Moët Hennessey. We will begin with Chandon by the Bay, a dry expressive sparkling wine made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes grown in the cool climate of the Carneros region. This is where the Napa and Sonoma valleys meet above San Pablo Bay, east of San Francisco. Morning fog and cool breezes that originate at the Bay keep the heat off of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes to create one of the best areas in California for those two important varietals. Also tasted will be the Chandon Brut Blancs de Noirs and the Brut Rosé.
From Joseph Phelps we will taste the Freestone Vineyards Pinot Noir with the grapes sourced from Pasorale and Quarter Moon estates and then aged thirteen months in French barrels. The highly rated Napa Cabernet Sauvignon has grapes are sourced from 5 of the most heralded districts in Napa, vinified, and then aged 16 months in French and American oak barrels. To finish out the evening we will experience the rare and complex Phelps Insignia red blend made from Cabernet sourced from seven of the best vineyards in Napa blended with a small amount of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Highly allocated this wine is a must-have for any serious California wine collector.

We are excited to have Molly Finnegan back for a special class highlighting the wines of Laurent-Perrier. This class is an introduction to the glorious Champagnes made in the north of France with centuries of history, considered the best wines of France, the wines for the coronations of the French Kings. We will explore the conditions that gave this appellation its reputation due to the high quality of the wine. There are three-primary grape varieties: Pinot Meunier (are almost exclusive to Champagne and relative to Pinot Noir), Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Molly will discuss how they relate to where they are planted and how they affect the aromas and flavors of the wine. Covered will be the ranges of Champagne styles, the different Crus: Grand Cru, Premier Cru, and the base Champagne villages, differences between the Grand Maisons, negotiants, owner-growers, co-operatives, and other designations. Molly will guide you through the differences within the range of one highly regarded Maison, and how to choose depending on the style of Champagne you like best.

“George Hendry and his family have grown grapes on the same family farm in Napa Valley since 1939. Hendry Ranch is composed of 203 acres situated in the low, rolling hills just northwest of Napa, at the foot of Mt. Veeder, and includes 114 acres under vine. This location in the valley experiences substantial marine influence, allowing Hendry Ranch to grow diverse wine grapes. Hendry is a prolific old school Napa winery with wines that are made only from estate grapes and are crafted to highlight the unique territory of this extraordinary vineyard. As historic family-owned estates of Napa Vineyards are being bought out by international conglomerates at an increasing rate, family-owned legacy vineyards are becoming rare. These old school family estates are still able to offer both great values and a link to Napa’s storied history. In this class we will explore the different regions of Portugal and taste wines from Vinho Verde, Douro, Bairrada, Dão, Alentejo, Lisboa, as well as the fortified wine known as Port. Portugal has a long and rich history in wine production. Wine was consumed in the south from 6th or 7th centuries BC, with more widespread plantings once the Romans arrived in the 1st century BC. Wine production increased for both local consumption and exports to Rome in the 1st century AD.
